US Forces Lock Down Mosul As Massive American Columns Advances

Jul 27, 2005
By Muhammad Abu Nasr, Free Arab Voice; Edited For Publication By JUS

In a dispatch posted at 5:40pm Mecca time Tuesday afternoon, the correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in Mosul reported that it had become known that massive US column under air cover provided by American warplanes was, at that moment, headed towards the city from Baghdad in the south.

The correspondent reported that more than 200 US vehicles along with large numbers of Marines and commandos were heading towards the city to storm Mosul from the south. Meanwhile, US forces already deployed in the city had closed the five main bridges in the city, and were preventing anyone coming in or going out of Mosul. More details to come as they are available.

Resistance Car Bomber Blasts US Column In Mosul Tuesday Morning

In a dispatch posted at 12:05pm Mecca time Tuesday, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that an Iraqi Resistance martyrdom fighter drove an explosives-laden car into a column of US military vehicles in the al-Islah az-Zira‘i neighborhood of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Tuesday.

The correspondent reported witnesses as saying that the martyrdom car bomber blasted into the US column at an intersection in the road that links the al-Islah az-Zira‘i neighborhood with the al-Muhandisin neighborhood. The blast destroyed one Humvee and disabled a second, reportedly killing or wounding a number of US troops. A traffic warden, who was on the scene at the time of the bombing, told Mafkarat al-Islam that the total number of American casualties was approximately eleven.

The Salafi Brigades of al-Barra’ ibn Malik issued a communiqué, a copy of which was obtained by the correspondent, in which their organization took responsibility for the Tuesday-morning attack.
