Stress is a factor in the lives of almost everyone in this world and children are not exempted for it. The reasons are the constant exposure to what was once considered that it’s for adults only, like death, sex, alcohol and profanity. The widespread exposure of these things, from TV, the media and the Internet has made children witness the unpleasantness that they were once protected from. It is no wonder that the innocence of the children that were once known for, has completely vanished.
Parents feel that the children have no reasons to be stress out, because they do not face the pressure of the daily commute, the job pressures, the constant fight to balance the budget, and paying bills that will be due. But stress for children may be simply not fitting in to the group at school, doing badly in their exams, not having the right clothes to wear, and most importantly not being popular enough among their peers. It is the peer pressure that causes lot of stress among children of all age groups, from elementary school, to high school and college.
Doing well in tests is very stressful to children, especially the comparisons that are made once the results are known. Teachers need to be aware of this and make sure that the children are not in any form of stress when taking their tests. There are techniques and methods for this and every teacher should be familiar with it. If you find your child stressed out with the thought of the test that is to come, it is advised for you to take the time to discuss with his or her teacher and find out the reasons for this.
As we said, peer pressure is a very large contributor to the stress for the children. This is because most of the children choose to be followers and not leaders, and they kept constantly hopping to catch up with what the leaders in their group are wearing or doing. You must teach your children that they must be proud of what they are and lead their own lives, without blindly imitating others. Let them feel that they can be a role models and others should be in awe of them and not the vice versa.
In today’s world, the concept of neighborhood has changed drastically. There was a time when you not only knew everyone in your block but also participated in their lives to a degree that do not thought of nowadays. We always tell our children not to talk to strangers and spend time with certain people. But molestation mostly occurs when persons within your own group take advantage. Make friends with the neighbors and encourage your children to do so. The common interests that both families may have can be a large stress buster, as the children would always have someone to hang out with, when they come home.
It is rather unfortunate that our own busy lives make it almost impossible for us to be with our children. They are more exposed to outside influences and their own group, which can actually lead to more stress. You can help to alleviate this by being aware of your children’s activities, their friends and acquaintances and other people in their life. In this way you can guide them correctly if they are straying, and the fact that their parents are so much a part of their life can create their children a safety valve and a source of comfort. You must make sure that you are not too intrusive as these may create other tensions that can cause your child more stress.
