LONG BEACH — An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot his co-worker in an office dispute before being shot and killed by another colleague Thursday afternoon at the Glenn M. Anderson Federal Building.
The wounded agent is in stable condition at St. Mary Medical Center, but the names of the agents who were shot weren't released because the agents' families hadn't yet been notified, Steven Martinez, assistant director with the FBI in charge of the Los Angeles office, said at a press conference just after 10 p.m. near the downtown building.
Martinez described the shooting that occurred sometime
before 5:54 p.m., when Long Beach police received a call, as a case of "workplace violence involving two federal agents in their office space" on the seventh floor of the Federal Building, 501 W. Ocean Blvd.
"When the incident escalated, one agent fired several rounds at the other agent, wounding him," Martinez said.
"At that time when that incident occurred, another agent working nearby intervened and fired his weapon to prevent additional rounds being fired at the victim. This resulted in the death of the shooter.
"At this time we believe this was an isolated incident, and we believe the shooter was acting alone."
Officials with ICE, the FBI and the Long Beach Police Department didn't take any questions at the
press conference. The FBI, detectives from the Long Beach Police and ICE's Office of Professional Responsibility are investigating the shooting, said Claude Arnold, special agent in charge of ICE's Homeland Security Investigations.
The Federal Building is located at the corner of Magnolia Avenue, across the street from the Long Beach Courthouse. In addition to ICE, the federal building houses the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Probation and Parole Office.
