Bill Gates says new Windows 8 operating system 'very exciting' and will be 'a very big deal'
NEW YORK, N.Y. - Microsoft founder Bill Gates on Thursday called the new Windows 8 operating system scheduled for release next month "a very exciting new product" and "a very big deal" for the world's largest software maker.
Gates said in an interview with The Associated Press that he is already using Windows 8 "and I'm very pleased with it."
Windows 8 is Microsoft's biggest overhaul of Windows in more than a decade and the company's attempt to stay relevant and exciting in a world where mobile gadgets have started to overshadow personal computers.
"Hardware partners are doing great things to take advantage of the features," Gates added. "It'll be a big deal."
Microsoft Corp. will release Windows 8 on Oct. 26 along with a new version of Internet Explorer.
Gates responded to a question about Windows 8 during an AP interview about the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's key role in a new global campaign to eradicate polio.
Windows 8 will replace Windows 7 on practically all personal computers sold to consumers.
It features major changes in the way consumers interact with their machines, and versions of it will also run on tablet computers and smartphones.
Although Microsoft has grown into much more than a maker of computer operating systems — providing computer services to corporations and Xbox gaming machines to game enthusiasts — Windows still accounts for a significant chunk of the company's annual revenue.
In 2011, Microsoft's "Windows & Windows Live" division generated 27 per cent, or $19 billion, of the company's $69.9 billion in annual revenue.

“Well, you're claiming that grief, hatred, violence, destruction, murder, and war are the only outcomes that can be attributed to religion. I offer you proof by counterexample: I have personally found that religion has helped me in my desire to become a better, more accepting, and tolerant person. This is not to say that all religious people are good, nor is it to say that non-religious people are bad. I claim only the fact that there are many positive things that can be attributed to religion, and I am of the opinion that, by my own observations, very few religious people resort to the sort of violence presented in this article.”

... And will have "few customers".
Unless it comes preloaded on your mobile device, few people will bother with this. It has few benefits for desktop computers, or even for regular laptops.

I've been using the windows 8 beta for the past 6 months. Essentially the same as windows 7, with a few improvements/ changes, and some major graphical interface changes to accommodate "touch" mobile devices. Once they get the beta bugs out of the system I think it will catch on, as was the case with windows 7 (fantastic OS) . One of the best features with windows 8 is the boot up time ~ 10-15 seconds!

I'll be interested to see this. I imagine it's more tailored for tablet like devices. If they can keep the OS as decent as Win7 has been, it certainly won't hurt MS.

i dont get it, are people still excited about new windows coming out?
I mean once XP came it, i think nothing really changed after that.
There was crappy vista, then ok Win 7.
Honestly xp was good enough, why keep making things with slight tweaks that no one is interested in? People are already ok with the existing windows.
Lets focus to improve current os's instead of creating new ones that people have to get used to

The one thing I was hoping for from Win 8 was that I'd be able to hack my HP touchpad, and triple boot it, so I could run Win8/Android/WebOS
What's disappointing is that HP is actually walking away from Win8 all together. Which doesn't bode well for the ability to get it to work on the touchpad.
