Police in the South-Western region have warned the public against the new armed rebel group known as Revolutionary Forces for the Liberation of Uganda (RFLU) formed in the region following the recent arrest of the suspected leaders.

Martin Abilu, the regional Police commander, told journalists at his office in Mbarara that the new rebel group threat is still a major security concern in region and country, urging the public to be alert and look out for suspected terrorists.

He said security agencies recently arrested the suspected RFLU rebel leaders and recovered military assortments of guns, Army Uniform, gumboots, grenade riffles among others in from their homes in Rugarama Sub-county in Ntungamo district.

He identified the arrested suspects as Michael Kabaziguruka 35, the Forum for Democratic Change deputy electoral commissioner, Frederick Namara, a UPDF soldier and John Kareebe 50, the FDC chairman of Rugarama Sub- County, Rushenyi in Ntungamo.

They were recently charged with treason and remanded to Luzira prison.

Namara hails from Nyakashenshero cell in Rugarama Sub-county in Ntungamo and a UPDF soldier who was once attached to Presidential guard Brigade, Kaziguruka, hails from Butare cell, Rugarama Sub-County in Ntungamo, but has a home in Luzira, a Kampala suburb.

He was also an FDC Parliamentary candidate in the 2011 for the Nakawa Division, seat Kampala and lost to NRM's Fred Ruhindi, deputy attorney general.

It is alleged that between 2010 to 2012 the suspects contrived a plot to over throw the government through meetings, recruitment, mobilization, acquisition of arms, uniforms, soliciting funds in different parts of Kampala, Wakiso, Soroti, Kampala, Kiboga, Ntungamo, Kenya and DRC.

Abilu added that the group have network in other districts of Ibanda, Isingiro, Bushenyi, Rukungiri, Fortportal , Kasese ,Kiruhura and Kabale with intention to overthrow the government.

“The group may join with other rebel group especially Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) that has been a threat in the region for many years. One ADF rebel identified as Capt. Wasswa was arrested in Isingiro early this year and we suspect they could be re-organizing to destabilize the country,” He said.

He called the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious terror threat to all District police commanders (DPCs) in the region on +256714667848 for Ntungamo, +256714667841 Mbarara, +256714667863, Kiruhura +256714667845, Ibanda, +2456714667866 and +256714667838, for the regional police commander.
