SUPPORT FOR ISSAM AL-YAMANI AND PALESTINIAN & SELF-DETERMINATION

MNN.  April 11, 2006.    As an Indigenous person, I don't support Canada's wholesale invitation to the world to immigrate onto our land.  The United Nations has recognized that self-determination is a universal human right.  Like the Indigenous People, the Palestinian are excluded from political recognition at the UN.  Canada drags its feet in implementing its convictions.

Why is Canada deporting Issam Al-Yamani on April 20th 2006?  He is a stateless Palestinian refugee, a long time Palestinian and human rights activist and deeply-respected member of the Palestinian and Arab community in Canada.  He's the kind of person who needs to be present when we discuss our on-going attempts to decolonize the world, to bury our weapons and to put to rest the evil of "might makes right" legality.

Mr. Yamani was issued an immigrant visa in Amman Jordan on March 21, 1984.  He was granted permanent resident status at Lester B. Pearson airport on April 27, 1985.  He applied for Canadian citizenships on May 17, 1988.  Since that time, Canadian authorities have been attempting to deport him due to his previous political affiliations with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

Palestine is not recognized as a state by the UN.  This man has not had a chance to contribute to the development of those international laws to which he is being subjected.  Does he have a state to which he can be deported?

Mr. Yamani is now on our Kaiahereh'ko:wa/Great Law territory.  It is illegal and contrary to modern principles of international law for the foreign Canadian authority to deport him, especially since neither he nor his people have contributed to the formation of those laws.

What is the evidence against him?  He has not been involved in any violent or criminal activities.  The refusal of citizenship seems to be based on racist criteria which is a violation of the UN Convention on Political and Civil Rights to which Canada is a signatory.  It would seem his deportation is based on his international affiliations.  There needs to be a demand for a public investigation to see what the grounds are.  If he has been given a chance to answer any allegations, the reasoning has not been made available to the public.  It's also a violation of the Kaianereh'ko:wa because we have a right to decide who can and cannot stay on our territory.  This brings justice into disrepute, not only internationally but for Canadian citizens and the Indigenous people.

Canada is a colonial institution and has no authrority to deport anyone from Iroquois land.  He is living under the Kaianereh'ko:wa, our constitution, which insists that the whole community should be informed about the actions of colonial organizations such as Canada.  These actions are illegal according to our constitution and their law.  They have not met the basic requirements of legality according to the Internaitonal Covenant on Political and Civil Rights.

I for one stand in solidarity with the Palestianian people in their quest for international recognition of their right to self-determination.  There should be an open and full public hearing into Mr. Yamani's case.
