Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has suffered a humiliation over a referendum on nuclear policy, privatization of water and an immunity law.
The majority of Italians have backed the referendum which may abolish legal immunity for Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. The Italian premier is currently involved in four corruption trials.
A ban on nuclear power production is also possible following the referendum which was attended by 57 percent of Italian voters.
The final figures showed over 90 percent voted against the government.
Italians flocked the polls even though the government had tried hard to keep the turnout below 50 percent.
Prime Minister Berlusconi had urged his supporters to boycott the ballot.
The main opposition Democratic Party has already started calling for the government to step down.
