The Disaster Within The Disaster:  It’s Time To Investigate The Aid Fiasco

Fractured Narrative: Haitian Calm, American Cynicism
Chris Floyd January 18, 2010 - One can almost feel the disappointment amongst Western media mavens that earthquake-stricken Haitians have not, in fact, degenerated into packs of feral animals tearing each other to pieces. Day after day, every single possible isolated incident of panic, anger, "looting" (as the removal of provisions from ruined stores by starving people is called) and vigilantism has been highlighted -- and often headlined -- by the most "respectable" news sources.

Chavez: US uses earthquake to occupy Haiti: "There is not a shortage of guns there, my God. Doctors, medicine, fuel, field hospitals, that’s what the United States should send," Chavez said on his weekly television show. "They are occupying Haiti undercover," he warned.

CNN won’t stop telling aid workers and the outside world about pillaging (the incidence of which -- for the first four frustrating days at least -- did not compare with what happened after Hurricane Katrina) and about how dangerous it is to distribute food, because of the likelihood of "stampedes".

The disaster planners have an agenda that goes beyond just saving lives. They want to use the crisis to rebuild Haiti along lines they support. (ie. Support of property rights etc) So far they have not spoken about how policies backed by the United States through the Caribbean Basin Initiative were responsible for uprooting peasants from the countryside to move them to the city to be a cheap labor reserve.

Why is the Pentagon so worried about "securing" the airport? Do they expect the Japanese to invade? How about just fixing the airport? Are they going to turn Haiti into an open-air prison and arrest escapees? Will black paramilitary helicopters start mysteriously hauling away bullet-riddled bodies and dumping them in the ocean like some claimed happened to New Orleans during Katrina? Why the heavy-handed military presence?

The US refused to recognise the new Haitian republic and imposed an embargo that lasted until 1862. In 1915, the US invaded Haiti to protect its economic interests and remained in occupation until 1934. Local Haitian leaders were no less predatory than foreign forces, as demonstrated in the truly terrifying reign of Papa and Baby Doc.

If a group of dedicated scholars, attorneys, journalists, and activists had tried to generate a comprehensive list of impeachable offenses committed by George W. Bush as president, and only 35 of them had been introduced into Congress, one of the many discarded ones, in rough and overly detailed form, might have read something like this.

The most terrible earthquake rocked Haiti. Haitians need humanitarian help, emergency rescue. But US sent a bipartisan military invasion. It’s been five days since the earthquake, victims still await help. The time for rescue is over. The survivors need relief from suffering: water, food, medicine, medical treatment and Haiti needs to rebuilding. Pentagon guns don’t heal or rebuild. Go home, Haiti doesn’t need more pain.
