A Million Haitians Slowly Dying . Bill Quigley: Haiti looks like the quake could have been last month. I visited Port au Prince shortly after the quake and much of the destruction then looks the same nine months later. The Associated Press reports only 2 percent of the rubble has been removed and only 13,000 temporary shelters have been constructed. Not a single cent of the US aid pledged for rebuilding has arrived in Haiti yet.

US state department defends Europe–wide terror alert. The US state department today defended the decision to issue a terror alert covering all of Europe but admitted that it had no specific information of any plot or potential target. The alert issued on 3 October stated "current information suggests that al-Qaida and affiliated organisations continue to plan terrorist attacks." It warned American citizens to take safety measures when travelling in Europe, particularly on public transport or at tourist sites. The alarm led to consternation across Europe... anonymous criticism by European security officials, and claims by Pakistani diplomats that the US move was politically motivated.
