The Lost City of Cahokia. In last week's issue of the journal Science, Andrew Lawler gives a lengthy report on the forgotten city of Cahokia. For a while now archaeologists have known about this Native American settlement beneath modern East St. Louis, but many believed it was what Lawler calls a "seasonal encampment." A new round of archaeological digs, done in preparation for a bridge being constructed across the Mississippi River between Missouri and Illinois, has unearthed evidence of "a sophisticated, sprawling metropolis stretching across 13 kilometers on both sides of the Mississippi" that existed about a thousand years ago, Lawler writes

Units in TimberWest Forest took a temporary dive on the Toronto stock exchange Monday after six Vancouver Island first nations applied for an injunction to prevent the pending sale of the Island forest company to two pension funds.

The Hul’qumi'num Treaty Group, which represents six first nations of Southeastern Vancouver Island, filed the injunction application last week with the Inter-American Treaty Commission on Human Rights as part of a larger complaint against Canada. The commission is an independent agency of the Organization of American States, of which Canada is a member.

Stop Elder Abuse On Pine Ridge Reservation!

Hundreds rally against Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline. First Nation, opponents shut down main street in Prince Rupert, B.C.

Targeting: Courtney Hoskins (Aging Services Program Specialist), Ms. Leslie A. Hagan (Native American Issues Coordinator), Navi Pillay (U.N. High Commissioner For Human Rights), see more...Courtney Hoskins (Aging Services Program Specialist), Ms. Leslie A. Hagan (Native American Issues Coordinator), Navi Pillay (U.N. High Commissioner For Human Rights), and John W. Yellow Bird Steele (Pres. Oglala Souix Tribe)

Elder abuse on the Pine Ridge Lakota Reservation has reached epidemic proportions. Seeking justice, a group of respected elders have revealed abuses in the Elderly Meals program that these elders depend on for food and cultural sharing!

Shamefully, the Oglala Tribal Government has dismissed the abuse claims despite public revelations and stories from the elders describing physical assault, psychological abuse and threats, denial of meals to elder visitors and the home-bound. Unhealthy food is being served cold and undercooked to elderly suffering from diabetes and other health problems.

Elders have had to brave a center plagued with financial mismanagement, and incredibly – – the illegal sale of drugs and alcohol from the building center staffs relatives while they were present!

Tribal government dismissal of abuse against elders threatens the safe transfer of cultural traditions between generations that preserve a soveriegn  Lakota Oyate – – people. This is a human rights violation. These human rights violations must be addressed now, before any more elders are harmed!

On March 4th, 2011, the Elderly Meals Program building was peacefully taken over and is now occupied by a stalwart group of elders and members of traditional Native warrior societies. These elders have asked for support.

Abuse and human rights violations of these elders MUST end and those responsible brought to justice!

For more information and updates please contact the Strong Heart Warrior Society as ‘Lakota Oyate’ on Facebook, or www.lakotaoyate.net.
