Buckingham Palace has confirmed this morning that the Duke of Edinburgh will be retiring from public duties after August this year.

“His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh has decided that he will no longer carry out public engagements from the autumn of this year. In taking this decision, The Duke has the full support of The Queen,” the eagerly anticipated statement read, continuing,

“Prince Philip will attend previously scheduled engagements between now and August, both individually and accompanying The Queen. Thereafter, The Duke will not be accepting new invitations for visits and engagements, although he may still choose to attend certain public events from time to time.”

He will “no longer play an active role” with the over 780 organisations of which he is patron, president or member of.

There has been much speculation over the past seven hours after it was reported that senior staff from all the royal residences were called to an ‘emergency meeting’ at Buckingham Palace, set for Thursday morning, overnight. Spreading like grass-fire, the rumours were that either the Queen or the Duke had passed away. Several hours after the initial report, it was reported a Buckingham Palace spokesperson had confirmed that there was no need to worry over the health of the two most senior royals (though this did nothing to quash the rumour mill!).

No-one will disagree that, after almost seventy years of public service to Britain, Prince Philip & rsquo;s retirement is well deserved.
