American Chess Champion Held in Russia on Fraud Charges After a year-long investigation, prosecutors accused Mr Dlugy - who was born in Moscow but emigrated to America as a boy - of trying to defraud the owners of Russia's second biggest magnesium plant of £4.9 million. He had been wanted since November. He is accused of issuing more than £4 million worth of bonds backed by the plant without the knowledge of other board members.

Russia promises to act if weapons put in space: The Russian Minister for Defence, Sergei Ivanov, has threatened retaliatory steps if any country deploys weapons in space. In an apparent reaction to the US plans, Mr Ivanov said "If some state begins to realise such plans, then we doubtless will take adequate retaliatory measures."

Oligarchs tumble from summit as Putin inverts power pyramid Speaking outside the Moscow courtroom yesterday, Tom Lantos, a Democratic congressman from California, said he would redouble efforts to win support for a bill he has introduced - along with Republican Christopher Cox - to evict Russia from the Group of Eight industrialised nations unless it adhered to international democratic norms.
