Augustin lived during the time of the collapse of the Roman empire. It was made painful by the collapse of order and Roman law. So Augustin concluded that the lack of order and reason was a sin.   He reasoned that a man and a woman during orgasm had given up all reason and were in a state of sin. And a child conceived to parents who had had an orgasm was born under the auspices of sin.
