IRAQ
--Iraq president rejects Baker report :Jalal Talabani, Iraq's president, has rejected recommendations by the US bipartisan Iraq Study Group, calling them dangerous and an insult to Iraqis.

--Our Genocidal National Narcissism: We Are the Very, Very "Bad Guys"...By invading and occupying Iraq, we engaged in a completely unjustified war of aggression.
Our presence in Iraq constitutes nothing less than an unforgivable war crime. Critics of our viciously immoral war bemoan American casualties -- and those casualties are indeed tragic. But even most of those critics almost never mention the hundreds of thousands of dead and injured Iraqis -- or the fact that we have destroyed an entire nation beyond any hope of recovery in the foreseeable future.
This narcissism is displayed almost as much by liberal and progressive bloggers as it is by the mindlessly robotic Bush and America defenders. I freely admit that I find this national narcissism disgusting and sickening to an extent that far surpasses my ability to express it fully and accurately. It is absolutely nauseating...

--This is the daily life story in Iraq Faiza Al-Arji...During my work with Iraqi NGOs , dealing with human rights issues, I met this man, he was released recently from an Iraqi prison, and I asked him to write me his testimony. Now, you all can read it, and recognize what a kind of new government we have in Iraq these days. Mr Bush trying always to support this government , and telling the world that this is unity government, doing its best to make iraqis more happy and celebrate democracy. This is the daily life story in Iraq, besides the kidnapping and bloodshed everywhere...

-- Afghan president weeps for dead civilians... "This nation and this country doesn't have the power to rescue itself. Neither can we tell the terrorists not to come from Pakistan, nor can we tell the coalition forces not to kill our children in the fight against terrorism,’ Karzai said, adding in a breaking voice and with tears in his eyes, ‘the oppression has gone beyond its limit.’
-- ‘Die America!’ chants Afghan "mob" at U.S. base... More than 1,000 stone throwing Afghans tried to break down an outer gate at the main U.S. base here Tuesday while demanding the release of eight detained villagers, and Afghan troops fired warning shots and used clubs to beat the mob back. U.S. troops also fired into the air.

--Boomerang Effect...William Lind, Military.com  One of the things U.S. troops are learning in Iraq is how people with little training and few resources can fight a state. Most American troops will see this within the framework of counterinsurgency. But a minority will apply their new found knowledge in a very different way.

--Harper pulls a Bush...Blame Canada? Eh, why not? Much to the surprise of most Canadians and the world community, Canada is reneging on its international commitments under the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which could weaken an international agreement to fight climate change after Kyoto expires in 2012.

--Sandra Day O'Connor: "My Life as a Buck Passing Phony"...Do you like Sandra Day O' Connor? You know, the peevish ex Supreme Court Justice with the mug like George Washington? O' Connor's placement on the Iraq Study Group is one of the more striking political ironies of our time. After all, who played a bigger role in securing a spot in the Oval Office for our Crawford Interloper than O'Connor? Nevertheless, O'Connor was rewarded for her loyalty by putting her on a panel that is designed to derail the Bush juggernaut before the entire Middle East disappears in sheets of flames. Now that's irony! Apparently, O'Connor has forgotten her part in the 2000 election swindle and now believes that the media has an obligation to clean up the mess she made...  By Mike Whitney  When the final text is written, the name of Sandra Day O' Connor will feature quite prominently right next to Rasputin, Pol Pot, Henry Kissinger, Pinochet and the other scoundrels who litter the history books.
--Bread, Bread, Everywhere, Yet not a Morsel to Eat... In my latest essay, I attack the subject of starvation. Hoping to tap into the reader's pathos, I begin with a vivid description of a photo of a starving Kenyan child (which had captivated my sympathy and sparked my desire to dissect the topic of famine). I then describe the process of death by starvation, present some horrifying statistics, reveal that the principal causes of famine around the world are elitist (Neoliberal) economic policies, expose the fact that the military appropriation to famine relief spending ratio for the US is about 99 to 1, and offer the reader the conclusions I reached (in exploring the topic of starvation)...By Jason Miller
