Bilingualism dismal = failure

In response to an article in the Feb. 28 Daily Gleaner entitled = "School=20 French success rate dismal."

It would appear the current methods used to teach the French second = language=20 in New Brunswick has proven to be a dismal failure.

New Brunswickers have finally had a preview of what this program has = been=20 costing annually for the past several years with very limited = success.

As reported by the recent commission only 28 of the 53,339 students = completed=20 the intermediate level of core French in 2007 at a cost of $10.3 = million.

The cost to taxpayers would have been the same for each of those who=20 struggled through the program and did not attain the desired level of=20 proficiency required.

No doubt several of the 28 students who were successful will opt to = leave the=20 province after graduating, hence the province loses on both counts.

Since it has been proven English students rarely meet the required=20 proficiency level set by the provincial government, Francophones will = continue=20 to occupy

all the top positions within government and increasingly in the = private=20 sector.  One wonders why, the government and media have been so = silent=20 until now
